Ugh:
Okay so remember how I said that I lost some of my pictures files? Well try all of the ones that had been scanned in or obtained at all in 2004. Royally sucks. So not only do I have to redo all of those, but I have a problem with the rest of the pictures files. (Photos consistently since 1996 as well as ancestral photos, etc.) That problem would be that they were last backed up on December 2, 2003 - that means they were done before I got Windows XP, and THAT means that my cd will not work on this computer.
So guess what I’m doing?
Lol, I am very lucky that the old Compaq is still kicking a bit. It’s down on the floor to my left hooked up and running - it’s using my main phone line and the same internet connection and is also connected. Both computers are running ICQ and I am doing file transfer with myself. :D I figured that would in the long run be easier than uploading them somewhere and then downloading them, probably with ftp - so instead I’m doing the uploading and downloading at the same time.
I have already done the ancestral photos, our wedding photos (and songs, they were in there, too), Re-Generation photos, and family portraits (that we do yearly). 1996 is done and 1997 is nearly done - they are included in the total of 1996-2003 (not including the 2003 that got scanned in 2004) which is a total of 123.27 megs. Arg. But I suppose this is better than nothing.
Ha:
So I just went out and got the snail mail. We got a water bill, a Lowe’s paper, and I got two pieces of junk mail. One of these is from this company called Domain Registry of America, droa.com. They are trying to get me to transfer one of my domain names to them. The really stupid (funny?) thing is that they are saying it expires Nov 27, 2004 and that I can renew it with them for 2004-05 for $25, or 04-06 for $40, or 04-09 for $85. Are they STUPID? Or well maybe they’re not, but they seem to think I am. LOL first of all, my domain IS renewed up through 2005, so why they heck would I want to pay them $25 for something I already paid $7 for? They are also trying to sell me .org and .com for $40 for two years.
The really sad thing is that they are probably confusing a lot of people out there who don’t know what they’re doing - for instance some of the people I do websites for. I’ve had to deter email spam like this before where those people were concerned. So the DROA says:
As a courtesy to domain name holders, we are sending you this notification of the domain name registration that is due to expire in the next few months. When you switch today to the Domain Registry of America, you can take advantage of our best savings. Your registration for [] will expire on November 27, 2004. Act today!

You must renew your domain name to retain exclusive rights to it on the Web, and now is the time to transfer and renew your name from your current Registrar to the Domain Registry of America. Failure to renew your domain name by the expiration date may result in loss of your online identity making it difficult for your customers and friends to locate you on the Web.
Privatization of Domain Registrations and Renewals now allows the consumer the choice of Registrars when initially registering and also when renewing a domain name. Domain name holders are not obligated to renew their domain name with their current Registrar or with the Domain Registry of America. Review our prices and decide for yourself. You are under no obligation to pay the amounts stated below, unless you accept this offer. This notice is not a bill. It is rather an easy means of payment should you decide to switch your domain name registration to the Domain Registry of America.
LOL could they BE any more stupid? Of course, then the back of the page is FILLED with TINY TINY print - it is so freaking small I’m not going to attempt to read it. Last time I read something that small, I got a headache lol.
Anyway, I think that when 1997 is done downloading I will cancel it for a few minutes (I need a restart on this computer anyway) and while my phone line is freed up I’m going to call these people and give them a piece of my mind. At least demand to be taken off their list, as is my right to do so. This is not the first one of these things I’ve gotten before - this is what I get for having my info on the whois. I have since removed it, but once you’re on those SPAM lists, you’re on em.
Anyway…
