hmmm… what?

elijahhenry.org

Okay, originally I wasn’t going to show everyone this, but after talking to Nicole last night, I figure I might as well. ;-)

I’ve had this domain for Elijah for a little bit now, but only have just now started some work on it.

Today I was even able to create a php submit form for messages (because I decided I didn’t want comments per entry, whatever), and it accepts Gravatars! Very sweet. Took me a little bit of playing with the php code but I finally got it to work by assigning $gemail = $row["email"]; to pull the user’s email from the MySQL database, basically. Then edited the Gravatar’s variable of email to gemail and put the code to display the Gravatar into the loop where my entries are printed: php echo $grav_url;. After I got going, it was actually quite simple.

You can see it in action if you click on the “leave a note” link. (IE users, bottom of page; everyone else, to the right.)

So, comments are appreciated on the site, layout, whatever… :-)

Basically, ever since before he was born, I’ve wanted to write down things for him. Not that I claim to be a great writer or anything, but just things that I want to pass along. Afterall, what if something happens to me before he’s old enough to remember me? Then maybe he will at least have something from me to him.
I tried several times to do something like this in MS Word or on real notebook paper. But I just kept giving up at it, frustrated at what I came up with. So eventually I bought the domain and so far so good, I’m doing better than I was before… ;-)

[UPDATE]
While I’m talking about Gravatars, looking into getting it working on that site let me to the new version of the Gravatar plugin for WordPress.

This version does more things now than just display a Gravatar if a user has one.

– You can put a Gravatar in a post or comment or page, like so (mine):

By doing <gravatar email@address.com />

– There’s a whole new admin panel, so I can now specify all my options there - the rating, border, size, etc.

– It caches Gravatars on your server, you can also see in your admin panel how many comments were done by a user (with a Gravatar) and you can delete the cached Gravatars if need be.

– The local Gravatar. Apparently, you can also now have local Gravatars which means any registered users here can go into the admin panel and see their profile and define a Gravatar that will be used on this site whenever they comment. So you could have separate Gravatars for all the WordPress blogs that you are registered at (and have this plugin, of course).

Mucho coolio and you can get it here. :D

AND last night I updated the subscribe to comments plugin, so you should now see the effects of that if you regularly subscribe here. You can also now subscribe without commenting.

Oh, I almost forgot about this one, I added a Gravatar sign-up plugin that should show a form below the comment form to users who’ve never commented or who do not have a Gravatar associated with their email address. It gives them the option to sign up right then and there for one. The author of the plugin hopes to better spread the Gravatar this way.

Dang, I love the Gravatars. :cute:

I’m glad you showed it. It’s all very beautiful. The work you have done on the layout is very nice as well! I’ll submit a message, I saw you were working on the message area but they weren’t up yet. :) Oh and that’s great you got the gravatars to work too.

Oh you added more! Hehe. Anyway I think it’s a very good idea. If I had lost my dad and I would something to know him by, so it’s good thing to do. You could also do some paper stuff too, but I really do love the look of it now. Your writing comes from the heart and that’s where it should come from. That’s the best kind of writing, the kind you really mean.

It’s a really nice idea to do that for your son. I kind of wish my mother had done one for me (although of course the internet wasn’t around in those days, so it would’ve had to have been on paper.)
