Old Toys & New Beds
Old Toys
Over the last couple of days, Elijah has realized that not only can he rip a door off the hinges but he can also roll his crib around. So he’s been pushing it out of the corner it’s in and playing behind it. In doing this, he has discovered himself a wealth of trucks and cars - namely a box of Little Tykes toys that make up a train/car track set I bought at a yard sale for $5 last year.
Now, his crib is in the middle of the room and he’s lining up train cars and trucks and cars and whatever else he can find on his little table. Every few minutes, he goes back to the box to look for more.
This inspired me to try and get some of the toys out there that he’s too big for. But in doing so, I couldn’t find much except for stuffed animals and a V-Tech piano toy we bought at a yard sale last year that doesn’t work right all the time anymore, basically.
I have, however, practically filled a huge plastic tub with those stuffed animals, leaving behind his absolute favorites or ones that were given to him by certain people, etc.
I left the peek-a-blocks in there in the hopes that before long he’ll want to do something constructive and try to build with them. I’m in the process of removing the shape-sorter, though, he never plays with it and puts his sippy cup in the cannister instead.
What did your kids play with when they were 22 months old?
New Bed
The plan is to clear out his room a little bit in the hopes of bringing in his toddler bed. I call it a toddler bed, but in reality, it’s a twin size bed that has a race car for the frame. We got it from some friends of my mom’s who have a rental house. The people who lived there moved out and rather than take the beds, they left the boy bed and a girl bed. So we obtained the boy bed and my mom cleaned it up and has been storing it for us in her nice, clean, dry basement. We threw away the matress that was with it, but my mom has a matress I “trust” that she says we can have.
So I want to bring in this bed and put it where his crib is currently. This is due mainly to the fact that the side of the crib that moves up and down is now broken completely and won’t stay up. Then I want to move out the changing table, we haven’t used it in a long time, anyway, and move his crib to the opposite side of the room.
I figure that if he can get used to the bed but still sleep in his crib at night for a while, maybe eventually I can get him to take a nap or two on it and gradually make the change. This is because I know he will not stay in it. He only sleeps at night because he’s confined in the crib and thinks he can’t get out and play or run around the house!
So, how did all of you out there with kids make the transition to real bed from the crib and at what age?
My parents are probably coming down the Saturday of Memorial weekend and the plan is for them to bring the toddler bed and go home with the changing table. My mom asked me if my brother and sister-in-law (due in Oct.) can use the changing table… well, of course, they can. My mom actually bought it for us. But I just don’t think they will have any room for it at all. Right now they’re in a small one bedroom apartment. I tell her that she should get them a pack-n-play that has the bassinet and changing table extension for them and they can use that for everything until they get a bigger place.
But I’m kind of anxious to get E into the regular bed because I’m afraid he’s going to realize any day now that he can, indeed, get out of that crib himself. For being such a wild man and a climber, I’m surprised he hasn’t tried to get out already!! (I’m sure you all are, too!!)
