hmmm… what?
Dated December 16th, 2005,
Dear Residential Mortgage Customer:
Please Read This Important Notice
We are writing to let you know that a computer tape containing information about you and your mortgage account with ____[us]_____ has been lost while being transported by DHL courier service to a credit reporting company. We deeply regret that this situation occurred and are keenly aware of how important your personal information is to you. We have no reason at this time to believe that this information has been misused. Even so, we want to inform you of the situation, provide background about what happened, suggest some steps you can take and assistance we can provide to protect yourself from identity theft now ad in the future.
What Happened?
The tape, which included the names, account information, payment history and Social Security numbers of our residential mortgage customers, was shipped via DHL from our data center… to the credit reporting company, Experian. The tape was lost after DHL picked it up from the data center. We and other lenders routinely provide this information to credit reporting companies to ensure your credit record is up-to-date.As we learned about this situation, we immediately began an investigation, and asked DHL to search for the tape and to investigate the loss. We also alerted federal law enforcement. We are carefully reviewing this incident and will take whatever measures are necessary to ensure that it does not happen again.
…..
I understand, as much as the next guy, that mistakes happen. Crap happens. But sheesh. I’m amazed at the irresponsibility of these ‘big’ companies…
Niiiiiiiiice.
I'm Valerie, late 20's, from Missouri. I'm married... with children: a young boy and a baby girl. I enjoy many things including photography, candle making, videography, history, and mythology. Baby Girl was born 11 weeks early after my water was broken for 8 weeks - she's my little miracle - so you're bound to hear a lot about her progress here. I am also a second generation homeschooler, that's bound to come up as well.

What’s more amazing to me is that they’re paying someone to shuttle this info around on tape. What year is it, again?

No way! I swear companies need to be more responsible!

It seems shocking that they transfer the data using an insecure storage medium such as a tape. I would have thought they would send the relevant data on a CD, preferably in an encrypted format, and password protect it.

Let’s add to the post the mail I got today: a bill from People magazine for a subscription that I never ordered. *sigh*

Ditto everyone else. That’s shocking and incredible – I’m in awe that something so STUPID could happen.
Bet they don’t use DHL again . . .

OH goodness. That must suck. The “fishy” thing is that my dad’s company used DHL, only because their clients requested it. Usually they do things UPS, but they insisted. All of the products they lost went “mysteriously missing” and now my dad’s company is to blame for DHL’s mistake.
I hope things get sorted out.

Perhaps these measures should have been taken in the first place!

A little late, but remember how so many companies started misplacing their data and tapes last year? I wonder if anything was recovered. I remember reading at least 5 such cases within a month of each other. Shipment going missing or laptop missing or something like those.
I hope you don’t have to do anything. Protecting personal identity is not easy when social security numbers go missing.

Thanks, Bes, for reminding me of this post. ;-)
We got a letter about a week ago, I think (it was in January, though) that said they’d found the tapes. So… yay.
They only sent us one letter to the both of us saying they’d found the tapes but when they lost them, they sent us each the same letter individually. Hmmm… :|
