New Year’s Past

On the way north tonight, Steve reminded me about a New Year’s Eve several years ago. So I got to thinking about past New Year’s Eves…

It was 1999, going on 2000…

We weren’t married yet and Steve was spending the evening with my family at home. My dad had to work the next morning, so he was already in bed (with his ear plugs, I’m sure) while the rest of us (Steve and I, mom, my two brothers, my sister) were downstairs watching tv.

Now, my littlest brother would have barely been 10 at that time. He has a paranoid personality, really, and he was completely nuts about “Y2K” - he thought the world was going to literally shut down and head back into the dark ages at the stroke of midnight.

So, we were watching tv as midnight approached and we didn’t notice my mom sneak off. We watched the ball drop…

Five… four… three… two… one… Ha—–

The power totally went out and my brother totally freaked! He started screaming, “Y2K! Y2K! Y2K!!!!”

Steve and I took a couple seconds to sneak in a kiss that my siblings couldn’t see (or they’d freak out about that, too).

The power came back on about 10-20 seconds later or so… my brother’s still freaking out, Steve’s rolling on the floor laughing his head off, and I’m saying, “where’s Mom?” A second later, she came upstairs from the basement laughing. She’d thrown the whole breaker.

My brother wasn’t too happy with her. :)

So, here it is, midnight, my time, January 1, 2006. Happy New Year, everyone. :)

hah! that’s funny. I remember the Y2k; it was supposed to stop everything and so many companies and products sprung up offering services and management to make sure companies didn’t die on New Year’s. Of course, nothing happened. All that money wasted on speculation and fear.

[belated] Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’s [not sure if I wished it before, hmmm].
