Happy Memorial Day, everyone!

I present to you a little virtual card containing one of my photographs taken in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis Co, MO. An unknown soldier’s grave.

Wow, what an impressive photo … I don’t know what exactly what Memorial Day is about as we don’t have it here in Germany, but: Happy Memorial Day.

But why’s a not for Despair/Xposure tacky? It just makes you easier to see who comes from there …

Yes, there are lots of unknown burials here. Not just soldiers either, though they make up the big part of the ones I’ve seen. But think of it, in a war, it is quite easy to be blown up, to no longer be recognizable. Or maybe just a person’s leg or something is found. It’s buried, but no one knows who it belongs to. There are many families out there who never knew what happened to their men or women, for every war. And even in peacetime, there are unknown burials. We have one here, well, actually, 13, from a steamship that exploded as it was traveling down the river, no one knew who the people were or where they were from so they were buried in our city cemetery as the victims of the explosion - this was in the 1800’s.

Memorial Day here in the US is for celebrating our veterans and those lost in the wars - offering thanks to them for their services, remembering that our country is not free because it was easy or without sacrifice on the part of many.

Thanks for all the compliments on the photo as well, everyone.
