hmmm… what?

LonelyGirl15

So, it apparently blew up today. Some chick on YouTube who’s been calling herself “Lonelygirl15″ and was supposedly a 16-year-old homeschooled student doing video blogs, is actually a 19-year-old actress who was paid to do this supposed internet drama.

This was the first thing I saw when I opened my browser this morning. Thank you, My Yahoo.

All I can say is: WHO THE HECK CARES?

The article goes on and on about some famous internet chick who is “dealing with” her newfound fame.

When, in reality, who actually has heard of this chick? Seriously, I go to YouTube and cannot find one of her videos without going straight to her profile, since I know the username. I’ve never seen any of these videos before and I watch a few.

They suck. Really. She never could have tricked me into thinking she’s some 16-year-old doing some of that video work on her own. Let’s not even mention how horrid the acting is. They all sound like they’re reading parts. Which, I guess they are.

But the thing that gets me? From the videos that I’ve watched, she makes homeschoolers out to be completely unsocialized*, totally contumacious, drug users, unbelievers in science, etc.

And that offends me.

Internet famous. Ha. Anyone out there actually heard of this chick before this “news” story. Man what is wrong with the world today when this is “front page” news?

* In at least two of the videos she claims she’s “never been to a party.” Right, okay. Whatever you say. Even my three-year-old has been to parties, c’mon. Seriously. Yet. Yes, she has a webcam with really good quality. And she’s so unsocialized that she has a boyfriend who’s allowed to be in her bedroom. Okay. Mhmm.

Yes, the highlight of nonnews news! I’d never heard of her until the debunk articles started flying. And I do spend a ton of time online compared to some.

Oh well, I just figure that means there was no news worth reporting, unlikely, or the media is globally to stupid to find real news, very likely.

As some folks say, nothing to see here, move along.

    Hi,

Technorati led me to your site and until today, I hadn’t heard of you either. And I’m neither a computer geek without a life or regular dates; I work 10-hour days, party even on Mondays or Tuesdays, have had 50 guests staying at my flat since June and have a 23-year Russian girlfriend who works as a magazine editor in this 24-hour-city called Moscow on the Moskva.

The point is, if you read the news regularly (I picked the story up a fortnight before it blew on The New York Times and she was on The Times of London as well that same weekend) then you’d knowabout the phenom. Sure, I was late a couple of months but I can attest to the buildup in curiosity in mainstream media about lonelygirl15 at the end of summer. LA Times, The Guardian, the Independent and a couple of French and German broadsheets also had the vlog in their news even before people found out Bree was Jessica Lee Rose (there competing with Austrian kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch on the front page).

Sure, what is the world going to these days. G-8 countries who committed to debt forgiveness haven’t backed up their words with deeds, the Doha Round of WTO talks hasn’t been taken out of the ER and may still end up being deep-sixed after all while North Korea and Iran threaten to destroy the nuclear nonproliferation regime (well in my opinion the White House’s acquiescing to India’s nuclear program burst the dams). Those things are really horrible - and you don’t even have to throw in obesity, pathetically escapist entertainment, racism, climate change and all that. But media coverage about this doesn’t really make me lose sleep. Don’t let it trouble you too much either.

I completely agree with everything you have said in your above article.. Have you seen the MTV interviews on her and Daniel? haha they’re so funny and so rediculiously dumb. I actually just heard about lonelygirl15 just last week, and i have to say id rather go back to when i didnt know of her.

    Good article:)
