Stoooopid Registerfly

Quite a while ago, while I was having all those stalker problems - ahem - I transferred several domains to registerfly.com to get the cheap WHOIS protection.

Immediately, I realized I hated their interface and service response time, amongst other things, and decided to, a few months later, move all my domains back to GoDaddy. In the meantime, I’d gotten a PO box to use on all my WHOIS information, anyway. So I transferred back and forgot about it.

Until, that is, Registerfly decided that my domains were going to expire.

Yes, they are so stupid, they think they still have my domains in their possession and they send me all sorts of email to tell me so. Spam, spam, mark as spam. Hehe.

Here’s a gist of the emails:

This is a notification that the following names in your account will expire in 7 days or less. This notice affects your account RegisterFly.com Userid: xxx

Protect your domains from expiring and falling into someone elses hands. Please take a moment to select which names you are interested in renewing below and select the submit button below.

If you are interested in accessing the RegisterFly.com website and renewing the names directly from your account, please select the link immediately below:

Auto-Renew your domains to ensure they are renewed on time

Forget to renew?.

RegisterFly.com allows a 30 day grace period after a name expires. During this 30 day grace period you can renew your domain. After the 30 day grace period expires your domain will move to the redemption period for 30 days prior to being dropped and made available again for registration. Once the domain is placed in redemption you CANNOT renew it via our interface.

I mean… hello!? Don’t you think they’d be able to notice that someone transferred domain names away from them? Or maybe they’re trying to trick people into transferring them back to registerfly? Either way, I know that they also don’t have any of the actual expiration information right, either. The last domain I got emailed for does not expire February 20th, 2007 as they seem to think, but in 2008.

Of course, there’s no unsubscribe information, nor can you reply. And going to the website? I can’t log-in and never receive the lost password emails. What’s up with that? (I smell DRA, lol.) Good thing I’m deleting the email address they’re sending to soon.

Heehee.

    That’s kind of funny.
If you hadn’t already jumped ship because of their incompetence, they’ve just given you even more reason to think they are disorganized and not want to renew. Duh. Good luck getting them off your back.

The domain never disappeared from your users account when it transferred, another wonderful disconnect that occurs with the website software. The only way to stop the belief that it still exists with regfly is to call, get on chat, or create a support ticket from the users acct. If you do the latter 2 it is helpful to send a URL of a whois (viewwhois.com is good) clearly showing the domain is with another registrar. You can also just wait it out, the system will eventually believe your domain is in redemption and the sweep (should…) eventually remove it from your account at that point.

You can also stop all of the shit by remembering your username/password,
get into your user acct, click “manage my acct” to get to control panel. then choose, I think it’s Settings, or admin. settings tab. Then I think it’s “change acct profile information”, then go ahead and REMOVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS…. & no more emails

If you did not think to put your password in a safe place for future use you will have to call or go on chat. Only after verification (usrname + last 4 digits of credit card listed on the acct) will a tech be able to send the password to your email of record, or give you the answer (only over the phone). By the way, I dont think the link has ever worked for password recovery… Beware… if you dont have the cc# it’s a long annoying process to recover the info.

One further thought… If regfly is up for sale, what would a potential buyer be looking at? Really one thing… How many REGISTERED DOMAINS… could it be a coincidence that these transferred domains are not dissapearing from their user accts??

    @ Jay - totally

@ Azos - yes, I figured that was what was happening. As for my username and such, I do know my username but none of the many passwords I typically use get me in, which is very strange. And lost passwords emails are not being received by me, I’ve tried several times. In that respect, then, I just spammed their emails and since Gmail is awesome, I don’t have to look at them anymore - they’re all in my spam box. I don’t have the time to wait and deal with chat support let alone call. I’m also inclined to think that the credit card I would have used with Registerfly is no longer valid. This has been more than a year ago.

I was not aware that they were up for sale but what you say makes a lot of sense. I knew they were becoming their own registrar as opposed to an Enom reseller, however.

Further “research” shows that a lot of people out there are quite unhappy with them right now - something about bad business practices? I don’t know, I haven’t done a lot of reading yet. But I was also unaware of all of that - all I knew was they seemed to have thick skulls when it comes to domain transfers. ;-)

Domain transfers are difficult out of regfly (and some other resgistrars too!)… but I’d advise anyone to get out of regfly ASAP… the company is on the downslide. There arent enough techs to support the volume or the constant problems, tech support was drastically cut back in mid December.

Also… the problem you may have experienced with being unable to log on could be a result of a security upgrade that was made to the website well over a year ago. Users that did not have “strong” passwords or did not log on for a prolonged period of time (how long? dont know!) would have their passwords automatically changed to a strong password. Anyone in this situation has to call in or go on chat to have it fixed. I strongly suggest to anyone with domains in unaccessable accts… go the mile, get yourself into your acct and get those domains out of regfly.

    Oh dear…

Wouldn’t it have been better for them to email the ones without a strong password or those who did not log in for an extended period of time? Automatically changing their passwords for them is very sneaky!

    Thanks, Azos!

I know how you feel , I registered a few domains with them, and I almost immediately realized it was a mistake. Now the 60 days registrar lock is over, I’m trying to transfer them asap to Namecheap. Interestingly, eNom has canceled their reseller account. http://www.enom.com/migrate/faq.asp. Stupid registerfly’s site isnt even working right now :(.

Registerfly are one of the worse domain registars i have ever worked with, shortly after registering a few names with them i realised they had took my money and not even regsistered the names! There site gives a securtiy warning as the certificate is out of date and the whole things a mess. Im trying to transfer my domains as soon as possible.

More than a couple hundred people faced issues having their domains expire without being able to do anything about it. Most of the domains were renewed before it expired but the renewal did not go through. I am among one of the people who renewed but my domain was still moved under ExpiredFly

I’ve called registerfly’s phone support and just frustrated that I couldnt get it resolved. I found this site: http://registerflies.com/index.php

Yeah they started to send me notices a day after the domain expire. Then would not let me renew. Sent payments 3 times to no avail. I didn’t know they had a 30 days grace period. The domain only expire April 16th and it already has some one elses name attached to it. Now their techs are playing dumb. I quote “WE DON’T SHOW THAT DOMAIN NAME IN OUR SYSTEM”. Duh dummies, you expired the domain and gave it to someone else. Now it shows ENOM.com has the domain in possesions of the domain SMILEYOURON.TV. can you believe?
Any ways now I am trying to get my bank to reverse those fees I sent to their black hole. Yes each service ticket takes exactly 24 hours to get a response. STAY A WAY AS FAR AS POSSIBLE FROM THESE PEOPLLE
