The St. Louis Jewel Box

The Jewel Box On Labor Day, after spending some time with Todd and Sharon at the Greek Festival, the rest of us (me, E, my mom, one of my brothers) went over to the Jewel Box in Forest Park, St. Louis, MO.

The Jewel Box is basically a huge greenhouse, but it’s oh, so lovely. It was built in 1936 by the city of St. Louis. According to a myriad of other websites out there, the Jewel Box is made up of 15,000 square feet of glass, the walls are 50 feet high. It is mostly flowers, of course, but it also has something called a “bride’s room,” areas for catering, and several bathrooms. In 2005, it was one of the places I took pictures of Sarah and Sheila for their school photos. If I was getting married any time soon, I think I might want to have the ceremony there. ;-)

Anyway, growing up, my wonderful grandma would talk about this place. I think mostly in reference to meeting other ladies there on a weekly basis, I can’t really remember anymore. I always wanted to visit, but never got a chance until I went with the girls in 2005. Since then I’ve now been three times. This last time was the first time I have been in the non-winter, though! Everything was so lovely, so in bloom. Check it out:

Of course, the inside of the Jewel Box can change, depending on when you visit. Around Christmastime, you might find poinsettias, for one:

Some more shots from winter time, including Vandeventer Place (which you can read about here):

But, anyway, we arrived at five minutes before closing time, so the guy let us in free (yay, we saved $4 lol). We just walked around a bit, then went back outside and walked around the fountain and rose garden then down to Vandeventer Place (stopped for some pictures) and across the bridge that is behind all of that, before the road, then circled back around.

By then, we were hot and tired, so we went out for ice cream. E loved that. :)

Anyway, one of these days, I’ll try to get to the Jewel Box during one of their special displays which they have in early spring or for holidays like Mother’s Day, Easter, Christmas, etc.

One of my favorite pictures of Sarah I took outside the Jewel Box:

Okay, the end. :)
