Erin’s Lesson on Computer Repair

Well here’s something I keep forgetting to post!

Took this video that day that we did the Rebelution one. The laptop in the video was an older freebie her dad had brought home from work when they were throwing a bunch out. The day this video was taken, she’d brought it to me saying it wouldn’t boot up. After seeing what it was doing, I was going to video it to show to some people for opinions. And, well…

I hadn’t realized until that second that she was serious about doing that. Well, fixed the problem I guess. :)

What the –?

KSDK - 19-year-old Gregory Smith Junior pleaded guilty Tuesday to assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Smith admitted severely beating of a 7-year-old boy he happened to see near a tunnel along Interstate 44 near Pacific.

The victim and his then 4-year-old brother were playing there, in May of 2006, when Smith walked up to them and started assaulting the older boy.

The 7-year-old was punched, then kicked repeatedly while laying on the ground. He was beaten so badly that both of his eyes were swollen shut by the time the young boys were able to make it home for help.

Police say Smith previously admitted to the beating, and said he had been drinking and taking prescription drugs before the attack.

It appears the attack was random.

What in the freaking heck!?!?

Personal Property Oops

So here’s a lesson kiddos, when you’ve got a leased vehicle, chances are, you’re not paying the personal property taxes on it directly.  I made the mistake last year of writing down our Jeep and when the Personal Property taxes came due, Steve freaked.  He was sure we weren’t supposed to pay it.  I called today and it turns out the county is supposed to bill Chrysler and then Chrysler bills us.  Why this is important, I have no idea.  Doesn’t make sense to me why it should be done this way but some companies apparently work it into your monthly payments.  That and they did apparently bill both of us, so… yeah, not paying for it twice!

So I’ve spent the better part of an hour on the phone with everyone and it’s taken care of.  We’ll be getting a new personal property thing in the mail, without the Jeep.

Ah it’s just such a mess.

Sometimes I just don’t want responsibility.  :)

no interesar

My head has recently started to pressurize. I think a certain someone got me sick. Ahem. I’d love to go to bed, but I’m on phone duty for another 45 minutes. So I sit here instead, in the chair with Rimshot. I’m bored, tired, playing Scrabulous on Facebook, and watching the hunting shows Steve’s got on. Actually, some of these commercials are quite funny. There’s one where the guy in the deer stand starts coughing and the buck he was going to shoot turns and looks at the camera and laughs at the guy and says that he sees the hunter and then prances off singing “it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.” Cracks me up every time.

My house is an absolute wreck, and that kind of depresses me. There are toys and newspaper all over the living room. Elijah refuses to clean anything up and only whines and cries about it and will rarely clean up more than a few at a time. I’m working too hard to get him to listen, and I’m too tired to do it myself.  He’s also the culprit who spread the newspaper all over.  There’s also a ton of dirty dishes I can’t make myself bother with.  If I’m not really sick, I’ll get to it all tomorrow.  Otherwise… eh, I might have to pay a certain someone.

If I feel this bad now, how am I going to feel in the morning? I hope this doesn’t last, because I really want to work out and make sure E goes to his school on Tuesday.

Yes, I’m having a pity party, thanks.

theatrical nonsense & bee movie

67/365 The last movie we went to see was Bee Movie, a couple of weekends ago. Before that, it was Hairspray, and that was a treat for my sister, sister-in-law, and I, from my mom. Before that, I think, I took Sarah to see the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie as a “fair reward.”

We don’t really attend that many movies. Usually, if I go, I’m with Sarah or a friend and Steve doesn’t like to go to the theater (I think he just doesn’t like having to sit still); but this attending of Bee Movie was Elijah’s first trip to the theater. He’d been wanting to see the movie since the little preview on Over the Hedge made its way into our living room, before the movie was even finished. Sarah went with us and we met up with my friend and her son who is friends with Elijah.

We went to a theater a half an hour north of here, since it was not only on the way to my mom’s where we were staying that night, the three of us, but the closest one to my friend. Typically, I prefer the cheap theater in South St. Louis County (where “older” movies are shown) or one a half an hour West that is also smaller on both size and price.

I almost fell over when I heard our total for the tickets. For the three of us, for matinée prices, it was $18. Eighteen! And then? My friend got her and her son drinks and popcorn. Immediately I had to get us some because Elijah was already starting to mooch, of course, it was okay with my friend, but I didn’t want him just mooching and he was already saying he was thirsty. So that was another $13.75 for a thing of popcorn and two sodas and a small water for him. Typically, we either have nothing or we take in our own candy and drinks (because I refuse to encourage highway robbery), but that’s always been without Elijah.

This is really ridiculous and I’ve never understood the prices of seeing movies in the theater. A lot of people these days can’t afford to have a night out with the family at the movies anymore. Think about how much it would cost for a family of six to go out, like my size of family was, or a family of eight, like Steve’s, or, heaven forbid, a family of eleven like a friend of mine comes from. Evening prices at this particular theater are now $8.50 for adults, and according to them, if you’re twelve or over, you’re an adult. (I found that out later, they didn’t question me when I’d said I wanted one adult and two children, so technically, we should have paid more.) All for two hours of sitting in the dark with strangers while strange men with flashlights watch you like hawks. I don’t get it.

And then, if you just wait a couple of months, you can watch the thing on a $1 rental DVD from Redbox with unlimited guests and pauses while you go pee or get some food… not to mention, you can (usually) skip the previews and sometimes the warnings.

But now? Not only do we pay high prices for the cost of a ticket and food, if you want any, but we are forced to sit through previews of other movies and now, commercials. I hate it so bad to be forced to watch the commercials in the theater. This last time, for Bee Movie, they seriously had five commercials and then about 5 previews - a half an hour had gone by before the movie actually started. The boys were getting antsy and Elijah kept asking me if we were going to get to see the Bee Movie, or what? And for this G-rated children’s movie, one of the previews even scared Elijah! It was for a movie for older children, yes, but it scared smaller kids.

So what about the big screen is so appealing? Just the fact that it’s big? And in this culture, bigger is always better?

And Bee Movie itself? Don’t waste your time. It was okay, I guess. I enjoyed parts of it, but it seemed that the best parts were already in the commercials. So if you’ve seen the commercials, you’ve seen the movie. Elijah enjoyed it, so I guess that’s what is important, but I really wasn’t impressed at all.

Thanksgiving 2007

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone :)

Even if you’re not in the US, it can’t hurt to stop today and just think a little bit about what you’re thankful for.

I encourage you all to look at even the things you wouldn’t normally think of as being something to be thankful for.  Be thankful in all things and in all things, give thanks.

the biggest loser

As y’all know, I’ve been working out for the last few months.  On Tuesdays while E is at school with my friend who’s son also goes to Tuesday School and then I was going on Thursdays as well.  The last couple of weeks have been a bit rocky, though, and I didn’t get to work out at all last week and only once the week before.  As of yesterday, I think we’re back on schedule, except that with Thanksgiving being tomorrow, I won’t be able to go until at least Friday.

Either way, I was pleasantly surprised on Saturday when we arrived at my grandpa’s farm.  As I was approaching his garage, coming from our Jeep, he yelled out, “Valerie, you lost weight.”  Just straight forward, no asking a question, just stating it.  The last time I saw Grandpa was on October 6th, over a month ago, since I missed him the weekend deer season started.
