Seeing Stars

Part of our kitchen cabinets aren’t over anything, this section is between cabinet and the stove. So we keep the trashcan there.

This morning, I was adjusting the can and was apparently closer to the wall than I thought I was and when I stood up, I banged the back of my head into the bottom of the cabinets. I was lucid enough to consciously stop myself from cursing aloud but wow, talk about getting a headache instantly! That and my eyeballs, all around, were suddenly hurting, too.

I went and sat down for what felt like a little bit but I think actually turned out to be half an hour. I looked up the symptoms of a concussion ’cause Jared suggested I look into it (the thought hadn’t even occurred to me). Other than my head and eyes hurting, I only had dizziness for a bit after getting up. No other symptoms seemed like something I had.

But from then on, my productivity went right out the window. I’d been getting things done up until hitting my head but afterward it was like I had suddenly gotten ADD or something. I didn’t finish anything I wanted to today except mailing some candles, and even preparing those took me much longer than they should have. I kept walking off, getting distracted over the stupidest things, or nothing at all. Which apparently is a sign of a concussion…

I was finally able to take a bath and laid in there for a little while, got a phone call while I was in there from someone I don’t really know well, just know a bit from internet. He had some questions for me and I was able to keep up with the conversation though I stuttered a few times where I don’t think I normally would have. I got dressed and Elijah and I went to the bank and the post office, then we rented some movies, picked up some microwave popcorn at home, drove through McDonald’s for a cheeseburger each then headed to see Sarah. It’s her birthday today. I handled all that really well, and I was even able to fully watch Underdog with her and my mother-in-law. (Elijah preferred to play, wouldn’t give the movie much of a chance at all.)

But then, at 5, I said, “well, let’s put the other movie on!” It was Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. Sarah said, “I don’t think we have time,” because she remembered that I had said I had a meeting in the library at 6. I brushed her off so she started the movie. Fifteen minutes later I looked at the clock and freaked, “we’ve got to go, now!” She was bewildered and like, “I told you so.”

Not to mention before this, my pain in my head was getting worse/noticeable so I’d taken some Tylenol. (Had had Ibuprofen earlier.) It wasn’t helping so I went for some more Ibuprofen, but when I got up I was kind of dizzy again… and very tired.

Made it back to the house, gave Elijah to Steve who was home now and we went to the community center. Me and one other lady were the only of the four of us that showed up and so we didn’t really do much of anything. But I noticed at one point, when I was trying to read something to her from the internet on my laptop, I started out messing up the words and lines. I got it straight, and read the four or so lines, but it was just weird. We called the meeting an hour early and I left sort of dizzy and nauseous.

So now I’ve been home for an hour and it’s taken me that long to work on this post. Not much has distracted me in between. Just a little bit of American Idol, talking to Jared, getting a drink and a snack. Elijah’s even been sleeping the whole time so he’s not slowing me down.

So I don’t know what the deal is. I just know that it’s after 8pm, so I will wait and see how I feel in the morning. Steve said he didn’t feel a bump on my head but I know that it is tender and it feels like either a very wide bump or that my whole head is swollen. My right temple is sore, too. Then I am very aware of the backs of my eyes, and the fronts hurt, especially on the lower part of my left eye.

So we’ll see. Let’s just chalk it up to say it’s been a very weird day.

That my dear is a concussion. They range in severity from mild to having amnesia. Seeing stars - that’s a concussion, having a headache is a mild concussion. Do NOT take any more painkillers for the headache - they thin the blood and cause the bleeding in your brain to be worse, causing more bruising and damage. Did you know you can get a concussion without even hitting your head on something? If you move your head fast, your brain that floats in fluid can slosh around and impact your skull, and get bruised. That’s what happens to shaken babies…. Anyways - rest and don’t do anything strenuous (walking, housework etc…) give your head some time to heal. Take care! Janice
