hmmm… what?
We do strange things in our sleep sometimes. Some people can wake up and are immediately alert, others, like the both of us, are pretty groggy at first. Early this morning, I was sleeping on my right side and off in a very deep sleep when suddenly there was pain in my left thigh. I awoke with a “WHAT. THE. HECK!!?!?” And Steve is there, “I don’t know!” Then, “the house is shaking!” He got up and ran to the window. We just kind of chalked it up to his being crazy (at least I did) and laid back down, it was almost time for him to get up, anyway.
WELL! It was a 5.2 earthquake, centered in New Salem, Illinois! That’s something like four hours from here, as a straight route (not following the highway).
It apparently lasted for 90 seconds which is probably why I feel like I sort of noticed it in my subconscious and would have woken up, had the pain in my leg not gotten me first.
Around here, we’re no stranger to the shakes. There’s a mine here in this town that blasts daily at 2:45pm and sometimes at 10:40pm. You can tell when they’re closer to us, more below us; it’s been known to shake the house and rattle the windows before. (I was in high school the first time I felt it, at someone else’s house. That was also a WTF reaction.) This also isn’t is my first earthquake, but it’s certainly been a while. And we’ve never had anything here that’s really caused damage where we live… at least during my lifetime. Does New Madrid, MO and the New Madrid fault line mean anything to you? :) I also remember the time, when I was in junior high, I believe, that a plane flew by and broke the sound barrier, that was like an earthquake!
But for us, it was an hour before I happened to hear on the radio that it was an earthquake, while I was trying to fall back asleep! Now I can’t sleep, so I’m up watching the news and hoping that no one got hurt… Strangely enough, today is also the 102nd anniversary of the great San Francisco earthquake. From what I understand, this earthquake is special because of the time of day, its location, and how far away it was felt.
Oh, and Elijah? He didn’t even stir, of course!
I'm Valerie, late 20's, from Missouri. I'm married... with children: a young boy and a baby girl. I enjoy many things including photography, candle making, videography, history, and mythology. Baby Girl was born 11 weeks early after my water was broken for 8 weeks - she's my little miracle - so you're bound to hear a lot about her progress here. I am also a second generation homeschooler, that's bound to come up as well.

I guess I’m not close enough! I hope nobody was in the mine when the earthquake…um, did it’s thing.

Amanda, I hadn’t thought about that!! My father-in-law works with that company, but not in the mines. He was apparently working the night shift today and his text message to me said that he didn’t feel it: “No, where I sit at work everything shakes and moves.” Haha. So I’m hoping that if anyone was hurt, he would have heard by now!
Some people in St. Louis are already reporting new cracks in their foundations. I guess if anything is wrong with ours… well we do have earthquake insurance because I remember paying it last year!

I live in a little town east of Terre Haute IN called Brazil, IN and I felt it at exactly 5:37am. Then at 11:20am I was talking to my sister in Huston TX and felt the second one, it was not as strong nor as long as the first but felt it non the less.

Ooh my two sisters-in-law that share an apartment, separate bedrooms, both said they woke up, out of the blue, right before the quake. My brother-in-law, who lives elsewhere, said the same thing!
I felt the tremor here, too. I was sitting down any my four-year-old standing in the middle of the room – he didn’t notice it, and it made me dizzy!

Don’t think I ever have felt an earthquake; but it must be both strange and scary at the same time! Hope everything is good with you now as well, and that there won’t be any more shakes.

Kids sleep through anything don’t they? Makes you wonder why they wake up so much in the night… One time Sierra fell off of the couch in her sleep, onto the hardwood floor and didn’t even wake up!

Yes, Anne! Very weird, leaves you wondering “what do I do!?!?!?!!?” haha
And haha, Janice! Poor Sierra! I know that when Elijah was just days old, he slept through the vacuum going right in front of his crib — now? Never!!

Ooh, something I forgot to mention was that my father-in-law said that guys in the mine didn’t notice the quake at all. Apparently down there, it’s completely different than up here in situations like that and they were more safe than people on the ground! Weird. :)
