hmmm… what?
Had ourselves a little experience last night. Kayleigh had been back in her pack and play only a few minutes when she started gagging and coughing a bit. That’s really nothing unusual, she was playing with her keys and when she does that, she often sticks them down her throat too far a bit and coughs and gags. You’d think she’d learn from the experience but she still does it.
But Steve took a look in at her anyway, he said she looked… “weird.” So he took her in the other room under the light, I followed, and started looking in her mouth. I totally did not see anything and neither did he until he looked a second time.
You know how when string or thread gets on velcro, how it can ball up and how it looks? I ended up pulling a piece of that, balled up thread (not velcro), from the inside of her mouth. It was a little over an inch long.
How she got that, we have no idea. After she was done playing on the floor I fed her then that’s when she went back in her pack and play. I didn’t see anything like that in there before and had only just changed the sheets an hour or so prior. (I’ve had to change the sheets three times in two days. Apparently, Kayleigh has this super human ability to pee her sheets but not her clothing when Steve is changing her diaper.) So that little piece of material/thread was hanging out in there somewhere and somehow her little hands found it. It appeared to have come from her sleep sack.
It’s just so scary how things like that can happen with a little one. You really do have to watch them every second of the day. I was blessed with Elijah in that he didn’t really put things in his mouth when he was little. Actually, it’s not been until the last year that I’ve had to tell him to stop putting things in his mouth (I’m still not sure why sucking on a Lego while watching television is cool). Kayleigh, though, man, everything goes into that kid’s mouth. Thankfully, though, there was really nothing wrong with her other than a little coughing. Steve was a bit paranoid and asked if I thought she looked blue, but nope, you must be seeing things, she’s fine.
I saw info about the crib recall on Fox News earlier. Now that is really scary. They showed what is happening, how a child can fall between the main part of the crib and the raising/lowering side and be suffocated. Something like 4 kids have died this way? Thankfully, our crib is not one of those recalled. (Also interesting is how that recall was first announced in January but I am only just now hearing about it…???)
Also scary: Dangerous Batch of H1N1 Vaccine Found. Don’t they inspect things before they send them out? Sheesh. And the pharmaceuticals wonder where they get bad raps. Look at stuff before you ship it out!
