Fishing with Daddy

The last time the boys went fishing, I was out of town. This time, we all went. Just for a few minutes the other day after dinner, before it got dark.

I get the feeling this time around wasn’t as fun for Steve as the last time, he said Elijah behaved better last time, though I kept feeling like Elijah was relatively good. On the other hand, it also seemed like he wanted to show off for Mommy.

No sooner, however, had Steve first cast Elijah’s line for him when a fish jumped on it and I got my favorite photo of the evening:

the gods of the internet have decided I should play more Sims 2

The god of the internet (Al Gore) is clearly letting me know he wants me off the internet, apparently. The other day, I noticed we had no dial tone with the home line, yet the DSL had always worked. ATT came out yesterday to fix the phone line. Something was wrong with the box down the street, the tech said. But my internet started to get flaky earlier in the day and it’s just been acting really weird.

Rain, rain, go away!

It has been raining for about the last three days I guess. And they’re calling for rain all weekend and all next week, too.

This might not be such a big deal but we really wanted to go to the zoo on Saturday. That and when it rains, my phone line acts up. The SBC guy is out there now trying to find the problem. This is the third or fourth one that has been here about this over the last year, I guess. Usually, though, by the time they get here, the line has dried up and they can’t find anything wrong with it. So, of course, this time, I called them as soon as I could. And it took them two days to send someone out. I feel bad that he’s out there in the pouring rain, but what am I supposed to do? Actually, with the phone line, my internet line usually goes, too. So I’m really surprised that not only the DSL but the wireless is working while I have no dialtone. What’s up with that?

So here’s to the rain going away, at least for tomorrow. I really want to go to the zoo!

Weirdness

The other day I got a phone call from a guy who said he was from ATT. The callerID was blocked. I could not understand half the things he was saying but from what I did understand, he was saying that my speed on my DSL could go even faster, and he’d like to check and see if that was possible on my line. Um, okay, whatever. He comes back and says that it is, and before he could try to pitch me anything I hit him with the basic “so how much would it cost me?” He said something like, “you’re paying $39.99 a month now, right?” NOooOOooOOooOOooOOooOOooOOoo, I had to say, it’s supposed to be $24.something. He seemed confused, said he’d call me back, and good-bye. I’ve not heard back. That was Tuesday or Wednesday. Looking at my bill online… it says $38.26 for DSL. I figured our bill was up higher last month because we’d gone over our long distance or something. Guess not. They’re going to be getting a phone call from me later today.

Fun with Wireless Internet

Last Thursday evening we went out to my in-laws’ house, taking the laptop with us to show them our Kentucky photos. Because I’d taken only the laptop, on the way home, it was in my lap.

We ended up driving around town for about an hour… seeing who had wireless internet and who didn’t.

And you know what? I was actually surprised at how many people have wireless in this po-dunk town, but I was not surprised that about half of them are not password protected or encrypted… including most businesses.

As equally interesting was how I couldn’t connect to my own wireless until we’d pulled in the drive. Strange considering that time I was a mile away (by road, not much less direct), opened my computer, and was connected.

Now, of course, I have no need to actually tap into and use someone else’s internet connection, but it was interesting nonetheless.

Just thought you might like to know that.

IE 7 Beta 2

So I finally downloaded it today, the Beta 2 version of Internet Explorer 7. I am a die-hard Firefox user, and so this really means nothing. :P

Anyway, I remember the days when my computer came installed with IE 3. And then 4 came out, and you weren’t anyone unless you had IE4. And downloading it on my dialup went on, and on, and on. Something like 6 hours to download IE4. It sucked. Because then they came out with IE5. Then I realized something, I could order their cds with the IE program on it from their website. This was well worth it, afterall, my computer refused to download version 5 and I’d never heard of any other browsers at that time except Netscape, and I hated Netscape (still do). Only their website kept telling me my address did not contain a valid city/state combination, so I had to use my mom’s PO box. I installed versions 5 and 6 this way. There haven’t been any big changes to IE since. Until now.

With all this hype going around about version 7, I thought I’d take a look and see what I thought.

First of all, I’m a bit disappointed that it upgraded IE6 instead of just installing a new copy but I guess that’s to be expected.

Then I discover that the new ATT/SBC/Yahoo Mail beta that I’ve been using is not supported by IE7. What’s up with that? Gmail seems to work okay though.

Well, all in all I guess it’s okay. There are a lot of buttons that have been changed and moved, though, and that will take some getting used to. But since I don’t plan on using IE except for sites that don’t support FireFox or for testing the look of my websites…. doesn’t matter. :)

And speaking of that, I am proud to say that each and every one of my websites displays perfectly in version 7. After hearing people complain about this version not accepting IE CSS hacks and things like that, I was a bit worried. Oh there is one problem, the live archives on this site and one other I run, but who cares? :P So, nope, no reason to worry. In fact, a certain bug in this site that I can’t figure out with IE 6, has mysteriously been fixed… :-D

Silly Broadcom!

And I’m up and running again! :)

Well, shall I say instead, my wireless internet is up and running again.

Regarding that noise…

Remember that noise?

After discussing it through email with tech support, they sent me a manual with instructions on how to get the fan out. First you take out the cd rom, the memory, the keyboard, and everything in the freaking thing!! It took me several hours, I’ve never done it before, and I was interrupted here and there. Cleaned the fan, which wasn’t all that dirty, really. Put it back together.

Wouldn’t boot up.
